In 1988, Liechtenstein musicians founded the "Liechtenstein Chamber Orchestra". It has since been renamed the Liechtenstein Symphony Orchestra and is an integral part of cultural life in the Principality. Since the professionalization of the orchestra, it has been possible within the last ten years to significantly increase its artistic quality and its public image.
The Liechtenstein Symphony Orchestra can point to an artistic collaboration with famous soloists. Audience magnets such as Kit Armstrong, Andrea Bocelli, Caroline Campbell, Emmanuel Ceysson, David Garrett, Maximilian Hornung, the Janoska Ensemble, Jonas Kaufmann, Lang Lang, Lebo M, Sebastian Manz, Sabine Meyer, Regula Mühlemann, Arabella Steinbacher, Rolando Villazón, Radovan Vlatkovic and Antje Weithaas increased public interest enormously. However, its role as an active promoter of young soloists is equally appreciated. The orchestra regularly invites award-winning young talents such as Diana Adamyan, Marc Bouchkov, Can Çakmur, Petrit Çeku, Dmytro Choni, Sara Domjanic, Eva Gevorgyan, Filippo Gorini, Andrei Ionita, Aaron Pilsan, Kian Soltani, Veriko Tchumburidze and Maya Wichert to Liechtenstein. A number of young guest soloists have since made international careers for themselves, so the orchestra has taken to awarding many solo concerts to rising stars.
The newly created position of principal conductor was held by Austrian conductor and pianist Florian Krumpöck until 2015. In 2016, he passed the baton to Stefan Sanderling, who led the orchestra until 2018. From 2018, Dražen Domjanic was also responsible for the artistic direction as artistic director. Since 2023, Carsten Huber has led the orchestra's fortunes in this position. Instead of a principal conductor, the Liechtenstein Symphony Orchestra has worked with various guest conductors since 2018, including Frank Dupree, Kevin John Edusei, Lawrence Foster, Kevin Griffiths, Uroš Lajovic, Sebastian Lang-Lessing, Wayne Marshall, Dawid Runtz, Giedre Šlekyte and Yaron Traub.
The Liechtenstein Symphony Orchestra, along with the Municipality of Vaduz, is also a co-founder of the Vaduz Classic Foundation, which presented the VADUZ CLASSIC festival in the capital for the first time in August 2017.
